Report: Two Premier League clubs join Spurs in race for talented youngster

The Sun claim that both Aston Villa and Southampton have joined Tottenham in the pursuit of Peterborough defender Ronnie Edwards.

Edwards has shone in what has been a difficult season for the Posh, making 34 Championship appearances for Grant McCann’s side (TransferMarkt).

With his club now being relegated to League One, the 19-year-old is expected to be hot property this summer and The Sun report he has attracted a number of potential Premier League suitors such as Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Villa.

Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund, Red Bull Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt have also tracked Edward’s progress and could look to tempt him away from England this summer.

However, with Edwards under contract until 2025 for Peterborough (TransferMarkt), it would likely take a substantial offer to prise him away from the Weston Homes Stadium. In fact, the report mentions a price tag of between £15 million and £20 million.

The England Under-19 international is highly rated by his club’s Director of Football, Barry Fry, who in April told the Peterborough Telegraph that Spurs had already registered an interest in the youngster.

Edwards certainly looks like an exciting prospect, having played the majority of the season at centre-back in a league as tough as the Championship.

He would not fit the “ready-made” player mould that Antonio Conte reportedly wants to bring in this summer (Football.London), however, he would likely prove to be a shrewd addition for the future.
