Report: Two Premier League clubs move ahead of Spurs in race for 27-year-old

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea and Newcastle United have now emerged as the frontrunners to snap up Tottenham target Adrien Rabiot.

Rabiot has been in excellent form for Juventus since the start of the season and carried that form into the World Cup, with the midfielder’s future unsurprisingly being the subject of heavy speculation over recent weeks since his current contract runs out in the summer (Transfermarkt).

Multiple Italian publications have named Spurs as a potential destination for the Frenchman recently, with TuttoMercatoWeb even claiming on December 26 that Antonio Conte’s men are ‘moving decisively’ to snap up the Juventus star.

Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in the former Paris Saint-Germain man, with CMW.it stating a couple of days ago that the Gunners are ‘further ahead in the race’ for the midfielder.

However, if Gazzetta’s latest update is to be believed, it is Chelsea and Newcastle who are at the front of the queue for Rabiot’s signature.

The report states that the Blues have intensified their efforts to sign the Juve star since they looking to bolster their midfield amidst doubts over the futures of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are also thought to be looking for reinforcements in the middle of the park to help aid their bid to finish in the top four.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Tottenham would consider making reinforcements in midfield until next summer but at the same time, I suspect that Rabiot is likely to run his contract down and leave at the end of the season rather than moving this month.

So, one would expect Paratici to speak to the Frenchman’s representatives regarding a potential move to Spurs. The big question is whether Tottenham would be able to match the salary that the likes of Chelsea and Newcastle would offer the 27-year-old.
