Report: Vertonghen set to agree Spurs contract extension

According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham will be extending Jan Vertonghen’s contract until the end of the season after being given the green light by the Premier League to do so.

With the Premier League suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, there were questions marks over the fate of players whose deals run out at the end of next month.

However, during a meeting between all twenty Premier League clubs on Monday, it was decided that those who will become free agents at the end of June will be allowed to extend their deals until the end of the campaign if the players can come to an agreement with their respective clubs (Football.London).

Football Insider now report that on the back of that decision, Spurs are set to act swiftly and offer Vertonghen an extension until the end of the season which the Belgian is expected to agree.

However, there is no confirmation on whether the club will doing the same for Michel Vorm, who is also set to be out of contract next moth (Football.London).

Spurs Web Opinion

There will surely be some players whose deals run out next month who decide not to sign a short term extension with their clubs in order to play it safe and steer clear of any injuries ahead of a possible summer move. However, Vertonghen has a good relationship with the club and is a model professional, and one would expect him to complete the season with us even if he is to leave in the summer.
