Report: Veteran Spurs player linked with potential exit ahead of transfer deadline

Tottenham could be looking to offload central defender Jan Vertonghen before the close of the transfer window, according to a report.

Vertonghen’s contract with Spurs runs out at the end of the current season with the 32-year-old having struggled to maintain consistent form in recent months.

While the Belgian international has featured fairly regularly under Jose Mourinho, there is no indication that he is close to signing a new deal.

Voetbalkrant reports that the defender could have played his last game for the Lilywhites already as he is unlikely to sign an extension.

They claim that Jose Mourinho was involved in the negotiations to extend Vertonghen’s stay, but that talks have now stalled.

It is now claimed that Spurs have decided to cash in on the defender, with a return to Ajax as well as a move to Inter Milan being mooted as possibilities.

Vertonghen has previously insisted that he is happy in North London (Evening Standard).

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no way that Jose Mourinho would let Vertonghen go without signing a replacement. He has put his trust in the Belgian since his arrival and I see no reason for him to suddenly change his mind. However, it is clear that former Ajax star’s performances have to improve substantially if he is to be offered a new deal.
