Report: Villa and Leicester could enter race for Spurs-linked centre-back

FC Inter News have revealed that the race for rumoured Tottenham target Stefan de Vrij is heating up ahead of the transfer window, with two other Premier League clubs now alleged to have expressed an interest in the Dutchman.

Antonio Conte knows De Vrij well, with the experienced centre-back being a pillar of the Nerazzurri backline during the Italian’s two years at the San Siro.

CMW.it reported last month that the Tottenham head coach is keen on reinforcing his backline in January and that he had identified the Inter star as a target. The report alleged that Conte had already spoken to the 30-year-old regarding a January switch to North London.

FC Inter News have now revealed that Spurs are not the only club who have their eye on De Vrij, with Aston Villa and Leicester City said to have reached out to the centre-back’s agent.

The report states that the two Premier League clubs have also been joined by Atletico Madrid in the race for the Netherlands international.

The publication also shed light on De Vrij’s contract situation and how likely the defender is to renew his current deal, which runs out at the end of the season.

It is explained that while the former Lazio star is demanding a salary of €4.2m (£3.6m) per season to sign on the dotted line, the Serie A club are only willing him a salary of €3m-€3.5m (£2.5m-£3m).

Spurs Web Opinion

De Vrij is perfectly suited to playing in the middle of a back three in Conte’s system and I am not surprised that the Spurs boss considered bringing the Dutchman to North London.

However, I believe that the 53-year-old is likely to have reconsidered signing the Inter star since Lenglet proved that he is more than capable of filling in centrally. Signing a natural right-sided centre-back to cover for Cristian Romero is likely to be Conte’s priority in January.
