Report: Villarreal set to face competition from La Liga rivals for Lo Celso

According to a report from Radio Sevilla (17/05/22 – as relayed by Fichajes and Sport Witness), Real Betis could try to bring Giovani Lo Celso back to the club this summer.

Lo Celso has done exceedingly well during his loan spell at Villarreal so far and it was reported earlier this month that the Yellow Submarine had already begun talks over a permanent deal for the Argentine (Estadio Deportivo).

The 26-year-old is not thought to be in Antonio Conte’s plans and it has been suggested that Spurs could use the midfielder as a makeweight in a deal to sign Pau Torres (Football Insider).

Radio Sevilla have now revealed that ‘without a doubt’, Villarreal will try to reach an agreement with Tottenham for Lo Celso.

However, they explain that Betis also ‘intend to take advantage’ of the market opportunity by pursuing the midfielder this summer.

The Seville-based club are said to be keen on bringing the player back to the Benito Villamarin Stadium, where Lo Celso had an outstanding 2018/19 campaign before moving to Spurs the subsequent summer.

However, the report adds that neither Villarreal nor Betis may be able to afford a permanent deal for the Tottenham man and might have to find ‘an alternative formula’ to sign him.

Spurs will hope to get a bidding war going for Lo Celso this summer as several clubs are likely to have been alerted to the midfielder on the back of his performances at El Madrigal.

However, not a lot of teams outside the Premier League have the financial means to spend £30m-plus on a player under the current economic climate.

So, Fabio Paratici might well have to consider potential part-exchange deals, with Torres being the most obvious candidate to be involved, given Tottenham’s need for a left-sided centre-back.
