Report: West Brom want to sign Tottenham 21-year-old on loan

According to a report from The Express and Star, West Bromwich Albion want to sign Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga before the transfer window slams shut tonight.

Tanganga made a great impression after breaking into the Tottenham first-team a little over a year ago.

However, a series of injury problems over the past months have halted the defender’s development this season.

Tanganga has now regained his fitness but the 21-year-old appears to be behind Eric Dier, Joe Rodon, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez in the pecking order.

While the Spurs academy graduate can also play as a full-back, Mourinho chose to start Moussa Sissoko at right-back against Brighton despite not selecting Serge Aurier in the squad and leaving Matt Doherty on the bench.

So the chances of Tanganga getting much game time at Spurs seem to be minimal this season.

The Express and Star report that the Baggies are trying to snap up the youngster on a temporary basis.

The report claimed that Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles was the number one target for West Brom but, with Sam Allardyce’s side falling behind Leicester and Southampton in the race for the England international, they have turned their attentions towards Tanganga.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tanganga needs a regular run in the side in order to rebuild his confidence and prove himself. Despite our defensive frailties this season, the 21-year-old looks unlikely to get a run in the side in any position across the backline. ‘

So, a loan move could be beneficial for all parties involved. However, if Mourinho is going to persist with a back three, then he might potentially decide to hang on to Tanganga as a precaution.
