Report: West Ham are closing in on player also linked with Tottenham

According to The Standard, West Ham United are now closing in on a deal for Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips, who has been repeatedly been linked with a switch to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the last few months.

Apart from Conor Gallagher, who has been widely mooted as Tottenham’s top midfield target this month (Independent), Phillips has been the player whose name has appeared most often as a potential option for Spurs.

Just last week, Newcastle Chronicle claimed that Ange Postecoglou’s men had asked to be ‘kept in the loop’ about the 28-year-old’s availability.

However, Alasdair Gold has repeatedly dismissed those links, most recently saying on his YouTube channel that Tottenham want a number eight rather than another number six and also pointing out that Phillips would not get his wish of regular game time at the North London side.

The Standard have now suggested that the England international is edging close to completing a loan move to the London Stadium until the end of the season.

The report explains that the deal is not quite done just yet, with Man City demanding a hefty loan fee of £7m, which the Hammers do not want to pay.

However, the outlet adds that David Moyes’ men are expected to come to a compromise with the Premier League champions and are confident of reaching an agreement this week.

Spurs Web Opinion

The Phillips to Spurs rumours never made sense for the reasons explained by Alasdair Gold above. The fact that he is heading to West Ham over an option such as Newcastle is perhaps evidence that the 28-year-old’s top consideration was always guaranteed starts, which he was never going to get at Tottenham.
