Report: West Ham frontrunners to sign player Spurs have ‘strong’ interest in

ESPN have claimed that West Ham United are leading the race to sign Sam Johnstone who is also said to be attracting interest from Tottenham.

Spurs’ current number one Hugo Lloris has been linked with a move back to Ligue 1 this summer and Johnstone is one of the names rumoured to be on Spurs’ radar as a potential replacement for the French captain.

However, ESPN report that the North Londoners could face competition for the West Brom stopper, with Manchester United and West Ham also keen on acquiring his services.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly considers Johnstone as the man to replace David De Gea and compete with Dean Henderson for the number one spot.

Although West Brom reportedly value the goalkeeper at £18m, it is explained that an undisclosed sell-on clause in the deal which took the Johnstone from Old Trafford to the Hawthorns back in 2018 would ensure that the Red Devils would be able to reduce their outlay.

Tottenham’s interest in the Baggies number one is said to ‘strong’ but the Hammers have been installed as the favourites to win the race for his signature as they would be able to offer Johnstone regular first-team football under David Moyes, who he has played for earlier in his career.

Spurs Web Opinion

With Johnstone’s contract with West Brom running out in 2022, I believe he will likely be sold for a fee closer to £10m than £18m. Out of all the goalkeeper’s Spurs have been linked with, I believe he is the one we are most likely to move for.

I do not expect us to be in the market for an out and out number one as I see Lloris signing a contract extension. That would obviously give West Ham the edge over us in the race for Johnstone as Moyes would be able to promise him the number one shirt.
