Report: West Ham try to gazump Spurs in race for midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have held a long standing interest in Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes and are hopeful of making a move for the player during this summer’s transfer window (Daily Star).

Gomes spent the season just gone on loan at Everton making 16 Premier League appearances and impressed during his time on Merseyside.

Barcelona signed Gomes from Valencia in 2016 but he struggled to make an impact at the Catalan giants and is expected to leave on a permanent deal.

Sky Sports News are reporting that West Ham United have tabled an £18million offer for the 25-year-old which has been rejected out of hand by Barcelona.

The bid was below Barcelona’s valuation of Gomes which they have set between £25m and £35m if they are to part company with the player.

West Ham are apparently still determined to bring the Portugal international to the club but will face competition from both Spurs and Everton.

Everton somewhat foolishly did not include an option to buy in the agreement for Gomes’ loan deal, meaning that Barcelona are free to negotiate with whoever they want (The Times).

Opinion

Gomes would represent excellent value at between £25m and £35m with the Tottenham midfield certainly in need of fresh faces. If Spurs do make a bid, Gomes’ mind will surely be made up – who would want to play at the London Stadium and have no European football when you can play Champions League in front of 62,062 supporters at a purpose-build football stadium.
