Report: What Conte and his staff did when Emerson was jeered off the pitch

A new report has revealed what Antonio Conte and his staff did when Tottenham Hotspur fans jeered Emerson Royal as he was substituted in the game against Leeds United at the weekend.

Since joining Tottenham in the summer of 2021, Royal has not had the best of times in North London. With Conte employing a wing-back system, Royal has been forced to adapt from his usual full-back role and it hasn’t been the easiest of transitions.

Royal is regularly criticised for his poor crossing and lack of accuracy when it comes to passing and many fans believe he simply cannot fit into the Spurs system under Conte.

The 23-year-old has been a near ever-present this season despite the complaints of the supporters. Royal has played 18 games this campaign, providing one assist along the way (Transfermarkt).

As the Brazilian was replaced in the 57th minute of the Premier League clash with Leeds on Saturday afternoon, the Tottenham supports began to boo and jeer him.

According to Alasdair Gold, this prompted Antonio Conte and his coaching staff to attempt to cheer up Royal. Gold said Royal was patted on the head by Conte and members of his coaching staff as he made his way off the pitch and into the dugout.

“It made for an uncomfortable watch. The Brazilian walked off amid the cheers and his manager, the coaching staff and many of his team-mates put their hands on his head as he trudged by,” Gold explained.

It’s never nice to see players getting that kind of reception from their fans, but I can totally understand the Spurs supporters being frustrated with Emerson Royal. That said, I’m sure he himself would be the first to admit he isn’t quite up to the task of being a right wing-back, so questions have to be asked of Antonio Conte for continuing to put him in that position.
