Report: What really happened this week with accusations that Eric Dier ‘unfollowed’ Tottenham

Alasdair Gold has revealed that the accusations levelled at Eric Dier about unfollowing Tottenham’s social media account and deleting some posts about the club were entirely fabricated.

Over the last week, there have been rumours doing the rounds on social media that Dier had deleted all references to Spurs from his Instagram account after being overlooked by Ange Postecoglou for the captaincy and vice-captaincy roles.

It was even suggested that the centre-back had deleted a picture he had posted of himself wearing the armband.

However, Gold explained that there was no truth to any of those claims, revealing that Dier was forced to follow Tottenham’s official accounts and post a stream of Spurs-related stuff to push back against those false accusations.

Gold wrote in his column for Football.London: “It has also been a strange and farcical week for Eric Dier, who has found himself at the mercy of other people’s mischief-making.

“The defender found himself at the centre of social media furore based entirely on fictional claims that he had “unfollowed Spurs” on Instagram and had removed all mention of the club from his bio on the site.

“The truth is he had not actually followed Tottenham or England for years on his account or had anything to do with them in his bio previously on an account, which is mostly taken over by his personal business endeavours.

“Then there was also a claimed ‘quickly deleted post’ of his about the captaincy following Kane’s exit, which was actually just a carefully-cropped screenshot by a mischievous Twitter user of a post published by Dier in March about the movie Captain Phillips as he sat next to his dog.

“Dier ended up following Tottenham on the platform this week, presumably just to quieten the social media nonsense, and released a stream of Spurs-related images on his Instagram story including one of the team line-up with the caption ‘Let’s go boys’.”

Gold also went on to reveal in his column that Dier wants to remain at Tottenham for the upcoming season.

However, he explained that with Spurs expected to sign one more centre-back this summer, which could see the 29-year-old dropping further down Postecoglou’s pecking order, the situation might change before the window closes.

The journalist also added that there was no truth to the suggestions that Dier is on his way to the Saudi league.

Spurs Web Opinion

People who make up things like this about players on social media are extremely embarrassing. It is one thing for kids to do it but to actually see adults spreading this kind of rumour and others taking it at face value, is quite disturbing.

While it is understandable for fans to not rate Dier as a player, I do not understand why so many are so desperate to make his recent struggles on the pitch into some sort of moral failing. It is quite evident that the 29-year-old is a thoroughly decent bloke who loves Spurs.
