Report: What Richarlison’s signing means for Tottenham’s homegrown numbers

Football.London have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are five players over the limit of the number of non-homegrown players allowed for European competitions after the signing of Richarlison.

Tottenham officially confirmed their capture of Richarlison today, with the Brazilian becoming the North London club’s fourth signing of the summer following the additions of Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster and Yves Bissouma.

Only Forster among the new arrivals is considered homegrown while the only player to depart Spurs so far this summer, Cameron Carter-Vickers, is also homegrown.

Football.London explains that the Premier League allows no more than 17 overseas players can be named as part of the 25-man squad, and Tottenham now have exactly 17.

Here is the list of homegrown and non-homegrown players as per the Premier League criteria:

Premier League non-homegrown players – Hugo Lloris, Emerson Royal, Eric Dier, Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez, Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Ivan Perisic, Dejan Kulusevski, Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura, Son Heung-min, Richarlison. (17 – on the limit).

Premier League homegrown players – Fraser Forster, Brandon Austin, Matt Doherty, Joe Rodon, Ben Davies, Japhet Tanganga, Ryan Sessegnon, Oliver Skipp, Harry Winks, Jack Clarke, Harry Kane. (11)

Football.London state that the criteria for considering a player homegrown are different in UEFA competitions, with the likes of Matt Doherty, Ben Davies and Joe Rodon not fitting the criteria, due to spending their formative years outside of England.

In addition, the likes of Pape Matar Sarr and Bryan Gil, who can be included in the Under-21 list for the Premier League squad, would take up a non-homegrown place in the Champions League squad.

This means that Antonio Conte’s men have five players over the limit of 17 non-homegrown players allowed for the Champions League.

Champions League non-homegrown players – Hugo Lloris, Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal, Eric Dier, Cristian Romero, Ben Davies, Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon, Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Pape Matar Sarr, Ivan Perisic, Dejan Kulusevski, Bryan Gil, Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura, Son Heung-min, Richarlison. (22 – five over the limit)

Champions League homegrown players – Fraser Forster, Brandon Austin, Japhet Tanganga, Ryan Sessegnon, Oliver Skipp, Harry Winks, Jack Clarke, Harry Kane. (8).

Spurs Web Opinion

Seven non-homegrown players in Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Steven Bergwijn, Emerson Royal, Sergio Reguilon, Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez could depart the club this summer while Bryan Gil is likely to be loaned out. So, I do not think the homegrown numbers are going to deter us from making any more signings.
