Report: What Southampton expect from Vestergaard amidst Spurs links

According to a report from The Athletic, Southampton expect rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target, Jannik Vestergaard to still be at the club next season.

Signing a new centre-back is reported to be at the top of Tottenham’s priorities in the summer and Vestergaard is said to be one of the names on the club’s radar.

The Dane will enter the final year of his contract at St Mary’s at the end of the season.

The Daily Star revealed last month that Jose Mourinho believes the 28-year-old would help to solve some of the issues his side have been having at the back this season.

When asked about the speculation linking him with Spurs, the defender admitted that he sees the transfer rumours as a ‘pat on the back’ for his performances.

However, Hamshire Live reported last week that Southampton had opened talks to tie the defender down to a new contract.

The Athletic have now backed up that claim and revealed that Ralph Hasenhutll’s men are confident that Vestergaard will stay at the club despite the rumours doing the rounds about his future.

Since multiple reports now suggest that Vestergaard is in talks with Southampton over a new contract, it is possible that the rumours of Tottenham’s interest were fed to the press by the Dane’s agent in order to get the defender the best possible terms on the new deal.
