Report: Why Barcelona decided against move for Spurs attacker in January

Spanish publication Sport have revealed that Bryan Gil was on Barcelona’s radar in January but the club chose to move for Adama Traore instead.

Traore was reportedly wanted by Antonio Conte last month but the winger snubbed the North Londoners’ approach in favour of a return to Barca (The Athletic).

Meanwhile, Gil completed a deadline day loan move to Valencia and the winger has enjoyed a fantastic start to his time at the Mestalla, having received rave reviews for his performances so far.

Sport have now revealed that Barca seriously considered bringing Gil to the Camp Nou last month, with the winger being one of the options on the club’s wishlist.

However, it is explained that the club’s sporting director Jordi Cruyff wanted to add players with ‘intensity, physicality and competitive rhythm’.

That is why the Catalan giants allegedly decided not to pursue the Tottenham man and chose to go after the likes of Traore instead.

Even if Barcelona had expressed a serious interest in signing Gil, I doubt Tottenham would have sanctioned the permanent sale of the winger.

The North London club paid big money for him just six months ago and given that his potential is apparent, they would have likely only been open to loaning out the 20-year-old.

However, perhaps Spurs might have thought differently if they felt that selling Gil to Barcelona would allow them to snap up Traore.
