Report: Why it may appear that Levy is backing Mourinho more than he did Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a busier transfer window than most fans would have anticipated, with some left scratching their heads as to why Daniel Levy is seemingly more willing to back Jose Mourinho in the transfer market than Mauricio Pochettino.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick has now shed some light into why this may appear to be the case, as he reveals that the current Spurs boss is much more willing to accept transfer proposals form the club’s transfer committee than Pochettino was.

He claims that the Argentine was skeptical of new signings and more than once turned down players offered to him by the club, including Marco Asensio and Youri Tielemans.

In contrast, Mourinho is more willing to accept players even if they are not his first-choices, as seen with the acquisition of Steven Bergwijn last January.

Kilpatrick also suggests that Mourinho has found a good balance between pressuring Levy and remaining firmly “on message”, with the Spurs boss viewing the club’s acquisition of Carlos Vinicius as a personal triumph.

It has always been pretty obvious to me that Pochettino was very picky with his targets and that some of the criticism aimed at Levy for not backing the Argentine was unfair. Levy backed Martin Jol, Harry Redknapp (Yes, he really did want Nelson and Saha that January), Andre Villas-Boas and now also seems to be backing Jose. t is also important not to forget the fact that we invested more into the first-team squad over the last two windows (Janaury 2020 and Summer 2019) than any other club in the Premier League, with the likes of Ndombele, Lo Celso, Bergwijn and Sessegnon being bought in.
