Report: Why Spurs have advantage over PL rivals in race for 21-year-old

The print edition of O Jogo (27/03/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) has revealed that Tottenham might have an advantage over other Premier League clubs in the race for Manuel Ugarte’s signature.

This is said to be because the North London club would be open to loaning the midfielder back to Sporting Lisbon.

Signing up-and-coming youngsters before loaning them back to their old club is a formula that has proven successful for Spurs over the last two years, with the club following that model for both Pape Matar Sarr and Destiny Udogie.

O Jogo have now suggested that Tottenham could now do the same with Ugarte, which may hand the Lilywhites an advantage over the likes of Aston Villa, Leeds United, Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are also said to be keen on snapping up the 21-year-old.

The publication asserts that Sporting have ‘every interest’ in negotiating the midfielder’s sale this summer and Spurs’ interest is described as the ‘idyllic’ scenario for the Lions when it comes to cashing in on the youngster.

It is explained that Ruben Amorim’s men are hoping to sell Ugarte for close to his release clause, which stands at €60m (£52.6m).

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Levy will be keen to do business with Sporting after the Pedro Porro fiasco in January.

While the existence of the release clause theoretically means Spurs do not have to negotiate with the Portuguese club regarding Ugarte, I cannot see us paying over £50m for a player who is still relatively unproven at the top level.
