Report: Why Tottenham and Arsenal may no longer look to sign Dayot Upamecano

Tottenham might have received a boost in their quest to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, after Football.London revealed that their North London rivals, Arsenal, are unlikely to sign the defender this summer.

The Frenchman was reported to be on the top of Jose Mourinho’s wish list as he looks to bring in a central defender to North London (Don Balon via TEAMtalk). Arsenal have also been backed to make a move for him (Daily Star).

The 21-year-old, who is said to have made up his mind to leave the Red Bull Arena this summer, reportedly has a release clause of €60 million (Sport Bild via Metro).

Football.London now reports that Mikel Arteta’s side are unlikely to spend big this summer due to their financial difficulties. It is also suggested that the club might not sign a centre-back as they are fairly well stocked in the position.

However, the report adds that Spurs too may decide to look elsewhere as Mourinho would prefer to sign an experienced defender to replace Jan Vertonghen.

Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona are also suggested as possible destinations for Upamecano this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Japhet Tanganga’s emergence and Eric Dier being moved back into central defence has meant that we aren’t as desperate for additions in the position as we were a few months ago. While I do expect Vertonghen to be replaced, I can see Mourinho going for someone with more experience like Smalling rather than a younger option like Dias or Upamecano.
