Report: Winger to be handed ‘last chance’ at La Liga club amidst Spurs interest

According to a report from Defensa Central (as relayed by The Daily Express), Real Madrid are prepared to give rumoured Tottenham target Marco Asensio one last chance to salvage his career at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Asensio broke into the Real Madrid starting eleven as a 20-year-old in 2016 and had a great start to his career at the Spanish capital.

However, his stock has fallen considerably over the last few years as the winger has struggled for consistency.

The Spanish international was rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar during the summer transfer window. Spurs eventually strengthened their wide areas through the acquisition of Bryan Gil from Sevilla while Asensio remained at Madrid.

Some sources from Spain have claimed that the winger rejected the chance to join Tottenham as he was keen to establish himself in Real Madrid’s starting eleven.

Defensa Central have revealed that the 25-year-old will have a chance to do just that under Carlo Ancelotti, with the new Real Madrid boss prepared to hand the winger a lifeline.

However, it is explained that the Italian also wants to give more game-time to Sergio Arribas, a highly-rated prospect from the youth academy, and Asensio may be the main victim of his introduction.

It is asserted that if the former Mallorca man does not impress Ancelotti in the coming months, he could be made available for a transfer when the window reopens.

Spurs Web Opinion

Asensio’s versatility might make him a useful squad option but I do not believe the 25-year-old will be an upgrade on Tottenham’s starting eleven. Besides, between Son, Bergwijn, Moura, Gil and Sessegnon, Nuno has more than enough wide options at his disposal for the moment.
