Report: World Cup winner Mourinho wanted in January set to become available for free

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Mario Gotze will leave the club in the summer when his contract runs out.

Gotze returned to Dortmund in 2016 for £20 million after spending three seasons with Bayern Munich. However, he has failed to have the same impact at the Westfalenstadion as he did during his first spell at the club.

This season, in particular, has been a disappointing one for the 27-year-old as he has struggled for game time, with the likes of Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard, and Jadon Sancho now ahead of him in the pecking order.

The World Cup winner has managed just three goals in 14 appearances this season, with the vast majority of those coming from the bench (transfermarkt.com).

The Express reported in January that Jose Mourinho had identified Gotze as a possible target as he sought to reinforce his attacking options.

The forward looks set to become available on a free transfer in the summer as Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc confirmed that he will not be signing an extension with the club.

As quoted by Sky Sports, Zorc said: “We will part ways with Mario Gotze this summer. It was a mutual and respectful decision. Mario is a great man.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe that Gotze could be a smart acquisition for us and I can see Jose Mourinho being a fan of the German given his versatility. While the 27-year-old has been under-performing for a couple of years, I believe he still has a lot to offer and new challenge might be what’s required to help him get back to his best.
