Report: Worrying reason Djed Spence was sent back to Spurs by Leeds United

Djed Spence had his loan spell with Leeds United cut short earlier this month and has since moved on to Genoa for the rest of the season. But now, we may know the reasons he was sent back to Tottenham ahead of schedule.

It is no exaggeration to say that Djed Spence‘s Tottenham career has been a failed experiment to this point. He has made just six first-team appearances for the Lilywhites, amounting to a measly 41 minutes of game time (Transfermarkt).

Since joining the club in the summer of 2022, Spence has spent time on loan at French side Stade Rennais, and Championship outfit Leeds United, but struggled to establish himself with either team.

Spence was supposed to be with Leeds until the end of the current campaign, but manager Daniel Farke decided to terminate the loan agreement this month and send the 23-year-old back to Spurs. He has now joined Serie A side Genoa on loan until the summer.

Djed Spence had punctuality issues at Leeds

The Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick has already suggested that Spence may have issues with his attitude and his professionalism which led to Ange Postecoglou deciding to move him on, and the latest report from The Athletic appears to confirm this is a recurring theme.

Apparently, Farke’s “prime concern” with Spence was the manner of his performances on the field, but it is claimed there were other issues, too.

Namely, Spence was guilty of “late arrivals for certain training sessions and team meetings,” and he even failed to attend an “off-field event.”

Despite Spence being regarded as a “polite and friendly” presence around the club, it is thought his punctuality issues led to “red flags” being raised for Leeds United.

Spurs Web Opinion

I don’t want to pile on with this idea that Spence is not taking things seriously or has an attitude problem, so all I will say is I really hope he can succeed at Genoa and get his career back on track.
