Reported Spurs centre-back target rules out summer transfer to stay with current club

Josko Gvardiol has insisted he will stay at RB Leipzig next season amidst claims that Tottenham have shortlisted the defender as a transfer option this summer.

Gvardiol has developed into one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga since joining Die Roten Bullen permanently at the start of the season.

The 20-year-old has since topped a list of targets for Tottenham ahead of the summer transfer window, with the Daily Mail reporting he has overtaken the likes of Villarreal defender Pau Torres and Lille’s Sven Botman.

Gvardiol, who has already been capped by Croatia, turned down one move to the Premier League while at Dinamo Zagreb, after he reportedly snubbed a switch to Leeds United worth £18 million in the summer of 2020 (Sportske Novosti).

And a potential transfer to Spurs or England in general may have to wait a little while longer, with Gvardiol himself confirming his intentions to remain with Leipzig heading into the next campaign.

Speaking to Bild, he said: “I really enjoy every day with this great team, at this first-class club.

“I don’t think about anything else. And if you ask me if I’ll play here next year? Yes, of course [I will stay].”

Gvardiol has notched 34 appearances in all competitions this season, including the Champions League, scoring twice and assisting three times (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

Gvardiol has risen into becoming one of the most sought-after defenders having developed impressively as both a left and centre-back.

No doubt there will be plenty of interest in him this summer, but he also won’t come cheap considering his age and experience already, but Spurs should definitely look to pursue this one.
