Reported Spurs target breaks league record after netting injury-time winner

Santiago Gimenez, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur in January, has set a new record for the most goals in a calendar year in the Eredivisie.

Over the last couple of months, a number of outlets have talked up the chances of Spurs swooping for Gimenez, who has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe since making the move to Rotterdam.

The Mirror even confidently asserted a little over a month ago that the Lilywhites are convinced that the Mexican international is the ideal option to fill Harry Kane’s shoes and that the North London club are prepared to meet Feyenoord’s asking price.

However, Spurs are not the only Premier League side who are eyeing the centre-forward, who is also thought to be on the radars of Chelsea (TEAMtalk) and Arsenal (L’Equipe).

The interest in the striker is only likely to mount as we get closer to the January transfer window as he is showing no signs of slowing down in front of goal.

Gimenez netted a 94th-minute goal for Feyenoord in their win over Volendam on Thursday, with the strike being his 31st league goal in 2023.

According to AS, the 22-year-old has now overtaken Luis Suarez’s record of 30 goals, which the Uruguayan set for Ajax back in 2009.

While forwards signed from the Eredivisie have generally flattered to deceive in the Premier League over the last few years, the sheer volume of goals that Gimenez is scoring suggests that he is a cut above some of the others who have made the move from the Dutch top-flight.

The Mexican’s impressive showing in the Champions League this season is perhaps further evidence that he is the real deal.
