Reported Spurs target claims he is happy to stay put but says he ‘cannot close doors’

Rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target, Gerson has revealed that he is more than happy to continue his career at Flamengo.

Since returning to Brazil in 2019 following an unsuccessful spell in the Serie A, the midfielder has gone from strength to strength, having won the Campeonato Brasileiro, Copa Libertadores, Supercopa do Brasil, and the Recopa Sudamericana.

Tottenham were said to have made a bid of around £16million for the 23-year-old on the back of his impressive displays this season but it was claimed that the Brazilian giants rebuffed the approach from the Champions League finalists (Goal.com).

It was reported a month ago that Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund were also interested in the midfielder, who was said to be valued at around £31million (Fox Sports Brazil).

However, the midfielder has now declared that he has not spoken to any other club and is focused on continuing at Flamengo.

When asked about his future, Gerson told Globo Esporte: “Today, with a year of Flamengo, I can guarantee that I never talked to any other club.

“My focus is totally on Flamengo. I feel at home, I am happy, I am dear and I am in a club that owes nothing to Europeans.

“We cannot close doors, football shows that, but today I am very happy and fulfilled to be in my heart club.

“I met again here and I want to have even more achievements with this shirt.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that Brazilian clubs are likely to be impacted in a major way by the pandemic, some talents could be available in a bargain deal this summer. Gerson is certainly a player who looks like he could evolve into a top defensive midfielder. The Brazilian has many Dembele-like attributes and whoever gets him might have a gem on their hands. However, there is a major element of risk involved given that he has not succeeded outside his home country. I doubt Daniel Levy will want to fund too many risky purchases this summer given the state of our finances.
