Reported Spurs target has a £51m release clause this summer – Fabrizio Romano

Fabrizio Romano has said that Tottenham Hotspur might have to meet Dani Olmo’s release clause if they wish to sign the RB Leipzig star this summer.

Olmo was sidelined with an injury for almost the entirety of the first half of the season but the attacking midfielder has been in fine form since returning to action, having scored five goals and provided another five assists this season.

Over the last few weeks, various outlets have suggested that Tottenham are one of the teams eyeing a summer move for the Spain international (Daily Mail).

A few days ago, GiveMeSport even asserted that Ange Postecoglou himself had identified the 26-year-old as a player who would fit nicely into his system.

However, the publication added that Spurs do not want to get involved in a bidding war for the midfielder and would only make a move for him if they are not facing significant competition for his signature.

Dani Olmo has a £51m release clause amid Spurs links

Romano has explained that there are no advanced talks regarding a summer transfer for Olmo and suggested that interested clubs might have to meet the player’s €60m (£51m) release clause.

When asked if the Spaniard could leave the Red Bull Arena this summer, he told GiveMeSport: “Yes, there’s a chance, but at the moment, I’m told that he’s still in initial meetings with his agents around Europe.

“He’s also not in advanced negotiations or talks because he has a release clause in his contract worth around €60m (£51m), so the price is already there.

“We know that Leipzig don’t like to negotiate usually. You have to pay the clause or nothing, like what happened, for example, with Dominik Szoboszlai at Liverpool last summer.

“So, I think they’re already all well-informed about the situation of Olmo, but at the moment, I’m not aware of anything advanced in terms of contacts.”

While £50m might be an outrageous asking price for a player of Olmo’s quality, I cannot see Spurs paying that much for someone who would essentially be a squad player. The Leipzig star is not going to be a regular starter over James Maddison.
