Reported Spurs target somehow needs surgery after bizarre kite-flying injury

Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham this summer, is set to have surgery on his finger after a bizarre injury.

Paqueta has been one of the stand-out number eights in Ligue 1 since joining Lyon from AC Milan back in 2020.

The attacking midfielder notched up 11 goals and seven assists for the French club last season (Transfermarkt), which is particularly impressive considering Lyon finished mid-table.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold said last week that Tottenham are eyeing the 24-year-old as a potential alternative to Christian Eriksen.

According to BeSoccer, Spurs are even willing to meet Lyon’s €50m (£42.8m) asking price to bring Paqueta to North London this summer.

The report claimed that Antonio Conte wants the midfielder at all costs and that over recent days, the Lilywhites have moved to the front of the queue for the Brazilian’s signature.

On Thursday, Paqueta took to his Instagram stories (as relayed by Goal Brazil) to post a picture of his hand in bandages. He revealed that he had injured himself while flying a kite and that he will have to undergo minor surgery.

The caption on his post read: “Remember that children’s games also have their consequences. I went to fly a kite today and cut my finger. Everything is fine, but to avoid any problems with movement in the future, tomorrow I will have minor surgery.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I doubt Spurs would have abandoned their pursuit of Eriksen unless they felt confident of signing another number eight.

Paqueta might well be the man the North Londoners have their eye on, and one would not think this injury would pose any threat to a potential transfer.

I still suspect that Paratici will make a late move for Weston McKennie this summer as both he and Conte seem to be fans of the Juve star.
