Reported Spurs target wants to play in Champions League, his agent claims

Amidst reports linking Emiliano Martinez with a move to Tottenham, the goalkeeper’s agent, Gustavo Goni, has revealed that his client wants to play Champions League football.

Martinez was one of Argentina’s biggest heroes at the World Cup, starring in two penalty shootouts, including in the final against France.

Unsurprisingly, the Aston Villa number one’s future has been the subject of much speculation in the days following his heroics in Qatar.

Journalist Dean Jones told GiveMeSport a few days ago that Tottenham are one of the clubs who are monitoring Martinez, with Antonio Conte’s men alleged to have identified the 30-year-old as a potential replacement for Hugo Lloris next summer.

Jones added that the Lilywhites were looking into whether the former Arsenal man would be open to leaving Villa Park next summer.

This was subsequently followed up by a report in The Athletic, which suggested that Villa have no intention of letting the Argentine leave.

However, Goni has now opened the door for Martinez to leave the West Midlands club next summer, admitting that the goalkeeper wants a taste of Champions League football.

When asked if the Villa number one could move to the Serie A, Goni told TuttoMercatoWeb: “Today there are few teams that can afford a goalkeeper like him. But Serie A, well, why not? Clearly aiming high, for the Champions League.”

Martinez is contracted to Villa until 2027. So, even if he expressed a desire to leave the club, he will likely prove quite expensive next summer. Pickford would likely be a more attractive option for Spurs as he is homegrown, is two years younger than Martinez and will have only 12 months left on his contract next summer.
