Reports suggests Pochettino wanted rumoured £50m target back in 2014

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Lyon forward Memphis Depay in the January transfer window.

The Mirror reported a few days ago that Spurs are readying a £50m bid for the Dutch international after sending scouts to watch him play multiple times this campaign.

Depay is currently in the best form of his career having managed 14 goals in 17 games for club and country so far this season (transfermarkt) and Mauricio Pochettino wants to bring him in to bolster Tottenham’s attack.

However, this is not the first time that Spurs have been linked with a move for Depay. The Guardian reported back in the summer of 2014 that the Lilywhites were keen to sign him from PSV Eindhoven after he impressed in the World Cup for Holland.

The Guardian reported a few months later that Spurs had failed with a £14.4 million for the Dutch international.

He subsequently ended up moving to Manchester United for a fee of around £25 million in the summer of 2015 (the Telegraph) but failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford and has since gone on to rebuild his career in France.

These reports seem to suggest that Pochettino is a long-time admirer of Depay and so it does make sense for the club to return for him in January, particularly given how well he has performed over the last few years. While I would be happy if we were to sign Depay, we also desperately need reinforcements in defence during January.
