‘Returning home’ – Heung-min Son reacts to club announcement

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that the team will travel to South Korea in July for pre-season in preparation for the 2022/23 season.

This will be the club’s third visit to South Korea, having previously competed in the Peace Cup in 2015 and organised a promotional trip to the country in 21017.

Spurs will play two exhibition matches in the country as part of the Coupang Play Series.

The club revealed that they are the most-watched and best supported overseas football team in South Korea, with the nation’s men’s and women’s team captains – Son Heung-min and Cho So-hyun – playing for the Lilywhites.

The North Londoners have four official supporters’ groups in the peninsula – Boryeong Spurs, Daegu Spurs, Gangwon-Do Spurs and South Korea Spurs.

Spurs also confirmed that they will be engaging with their fans in Korea during the trip and be celebrating the local culture with Heung-min Son expressing his excitement about the prospect of playing for the club in his homeland.

The Spurs forward spent three weeks in his home country back in 2020 to complete his mandatory three-week military service, finishing as one of only five individuals to receive an award at the Marine Corps’ training camp graduation ceremony on the southern island of Jeju (Korea Herald).

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy admitted that a visit to South Korea was long overdue for the club given their popularity in the country.

Levy said: “We are delighted to be heading back out on tour after what has been such a challenging time for us all. Being able to take our team overseas during pre-season is always a key part of the preparation for any forthcoming season – I speak on behalf of all players and staff in saying we have missed being able to do so in recent years.

“A trip to Korea, in particular, is long overdue – we are well aware of the incredible support we have there, with many fans travelling to London to watch our matches in recent years.”

Son said on returning to his home country for pre-season: “I am extremely excited to be returning home to South Korea this summer alongside my Spurs team-mates – for most of whom this will be their first visit.

“I can’t wait to see their reaction to the passionate Korean fans and the incredible atmosphere in what we are sure will be packed out stadiums for our matches.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham have always travelled to Asia or North America for their pre-season promotional tours over the best part of their last two decades, which is not surprising given that the majority of the club’s global fanbase are from those parts of the world.

They were unable to travel for the past couple of years due to the pandemic and I am not surprised that a trip to South Korea has been prioritised now that the travel restrictions are being eased around the world.
