‘Revitalised’ – Gary Neville admits he was wrong about one Tottenham star

Gary Neville has revealed he doubted Heung-min Son a couple of years ago and thought the Spurs star was past his best, but has now admitted he was wrong about the South Korean.

Heung-min Son is now the top man at Tottenham Hotspur, having been given the captain’s armband by new manager Ange Postecoglou in the summer in the wake of Hugo Lloris‘ decline and the sale of Harry Kane.

The 31-year-old has clearly relished the responsibility, too, proving to be an impeccable leader both on and off the pitch. He is also back to his very best on the pitch, bagging 12 goals and five assists already this term (Transfermarkt).

It is in stark contrast to Son’s fortunes last season, where injury issues and a dip in form saw the attacker score just ten Premier League goals all year (Transfermarkt). That came on the back of Son winning the Golden Boot award the year before, with 23 goals.

Heung-min Son is back to his best for Tottenham

So, with such up-and-down form, it is understandable that some people may have written Son off in the past. Gary Neville certainly did, but he has admitted his mistake.

Speaking on Sky Sports Premier League (7:32 pm, January 1, 2024), the pundit was discussing the return to form of Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, and referenced Son’s own improvement.

He said: “I have done quite a few Liverpool games in the last month, and you get a real understanding of when players are sort of back to their top form. Sometimes it happens. I remember Son at Spurs a couple of seasons ago thinking has he gone? Have his best years gone?

“And then all of a sudden, they become revitalised, they get a new lease of life, something happens, and that’s what’s happened with Virgil van Dijk.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have to admit I was very worried Son had lost his spark last year and would never find it again, but honestly, I think Kane moving on and Son finding himself as the centre of attention has been the best thing for him. He looks so motivated and driven, and he is absolutely on fire.
