‘Ridiculous defending’ – Jermaine Jenas blasts Spurs player over Newcastle goal

Tottenham Hotspur have now conceded the opening goal in all three of their Premier League games this season after Newcastle United took a first half lead.

The goal came when Newcastle forward Joelinton made the most of some terrible positional defending from Davinson Sanchez to get in front of the defence and latched on to a ball from Christian Atsu, taking one touch before slotting it past Hugo Lloris.

Sanchez has found himself starting each of Tottenham’s three Premier League matches so far in front of Jan Vertonghen who was named among the substitutes.

Jermaine Jenas certainly did not mince his words with his assessment of Sanchez’s defending.

It was terrible play from the defender who completely switched off at the back and it has ended up costing his side dearly.

With the North London derby taking place a week today, surely Mauricio Pochettino must now reconsider recalling Vertonghen to his starting eleven for the trip to the Emirates.

Jenas told BBC Sport: “I honestly do not know what is going through Davinson Sanchez mind here, it is ridiculous defending. He does not look once where the Newcastle players are. He does not look behind him. The finish from Joelinton is sublime. It’s brilliant from Newcastle, shocking from Tottenham.”
