Rio Ferdinand names underrated signing as Tottenham Player of the Season

Rio Ferdinand has revealed who he thinks deserves the title of Tottenham Hotspur Player of the Season after the club’s Europa League win.

Tottenham Hotspur fans will be pleased with how the 2024/25 season ended, as the club ended their 17-year wait for a major honour in dramatic fashion, defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final at the San Mames Stadium in Spain.

It was Brennan Johnson’s goal that proved decisive on the night, with the Welshman finishing the campaign as Tottenham’s top scorer in both the Europa League and across all competitions, but was overlooked by Rio Ferdinand as Spurs’ player of the season.

Micky van de Ven also made a vital contribution, as his spectacular goal-line clearance ensured that Tottenham remained in front, following a nervy moment caused by Guglielmo Vicario’s poor handling of a cross into the Spurs box.

Rio Ferdinand picks Dominic Solanke as his Tottenham player of the year

Several Tottenham players have impressed throughout this campaign, with Pedro Porro proving vital as he remained ever-present and injury-free across all competitions.

James Maddison had his moments too, with the English midfielder grabbing key goals during Spurs’ Europa League knockout run, reminding everyone of his attacking threat and creativity.

Guglielmo Vicario, despite a series of inconsistent performances throughout the season, held his own in the final, with Vicario’s underlying stats highlighting just how crucial he was on Wednesday night.

Several players could lay claim to being Tottenham’s player of the season, but former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has chosen Spurs summer signing Dominic Solanke as his pick.

Dominic Solanke delivers for Spurs in first season after summer move

Dominic Solanke joined Tottenham last summer, as the Lilywhites finally brought in a long-awaited replacement for Harry Kane, following his departure to Bayern Munich.

The England international adapted to life quickly in north London, finishing the 2024/25 campaign as the Spurs player with the most goal contributions, notching 24 in all competitions.

While those are not record-breaking numbers, the 27-year-old produced crucial goals during Tottenham’s Europa League run, stepping up when the stakes were at their highest.

His hold-up play, pressing, and overall work rate have brought qualities to the forward line that Tottenham have lacked since Kane’s departure.

The Tottenham faithful would be hoping he can add more goals to the 16 he scored in all competitions when he returns for a second campaign at Spurs.
