Rio Ferdinand singles out Spurs player with huge potential

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that Ryan Sessegnon is a player with huge potential.

The 19-year-old was handed his first Premier League start by Jose Mourinho in last night’s match against Bayern Munich and scored Tottenham’s only goal of the game in the 3-1 defeat.

Sessegnon had experienced a frustrating start to life at Tottenham having suffered a hamstring injury whilst on international duty with the England Under-21 side during the summer.

He certainly repaid the faith shown in him by Mourinho when he unleashed a powerful half volley which beat Manuel Neuer at his near post.

Ferdinand believes that the left-sided player will be one which England will certainly have their eye on for the future and will be able to showcase his potential with the Champions League finalists.

He told BT Sport during the live television coverage of Bayern Munich v Spurs on 11/12/19 from 19:15: “Huge potential. He’s a player England have pinned their hopes on, he’d have been highlighted coming through.

“He would have been so frustrated because he was a mainstay in the Fulham team, and then he’s picked up and injury and it’s been a stop start beginning to his Spurs career.

“There’s no doubting this kid has got potential. He’ll have opportunities to show what he’s capable of.”

Opinion

Sessegnon will hopefully have made Mourinho think twice about his team selection for Sunday’s match against Wolves following his display in Munich.
