Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi has explained why new signing Savio missed out against Newcastle United, despite his stellar debut last time out against Charlton Athletic.

Spurs lost 2-0 to Newcastle United in what was their first Premier League game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season.

Last time out at their home ground, Tottenham walked away with a victory after beating Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the Carabao Cup round two, with a late Savio cameo taking the headlines.

De Zerbi would have been hoping for his side can carry that momentum into the Premier League but Spurs walked away with yet another goalless defeat.

Roberto De Zerbi explains Savio omission for Tottenham

A few big players made their return for Spurs today, with Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro starting from the off, while Omar Marmoush made his Tottenham debut. Mo Kudus also came on for his first appearance since February.

But new signing Savio missed out entirely, despite managing a stellar outing from the bench last time out against Charlton Athletic.

De Zerbi has now explained the reason behind Savio’s absence, with the Tottenham boss providing an update on the Brazilian’s fitness and revealing when he expects him to return.

“There was bad news yesterday, before training in the afternoon. He suffered muscle fatigue and the medical staff didn’t want to take a risk. I agree with them.”

The Tottenham boss did confirm that Savio will be available to face Forest next week.
