Robinson backs ‘outstanding’ Spurs player to make right-back spot his own

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has raved about young defender Japhet Tanganga following his impressive performances in the last week.

Tanganga was handed his Premier League debut against Liverpool last weekend by Jose Mourinho and dealt impressively with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

He has since then played both as a right-back and a left-back in the FA Cup clash against Middlesbrough and the game against Watford respectively.

The 20-year-old defender has delivered in all three matches and proved that he can play across the backline. Robinson has suggested that he could be the man to solve the team’s issues at right-back this season.

While Serge Aurier has improved since the arrival of Jose Mourinho, there are still question marks over the Ivorian due to his lack of consistency.

Walker-Peters meanwhile is reportedly surplus to requirements at the club and has been linked with an exit this month (Evening Standard). Robinson believes Tanganga has the qualities to make the position his own.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Spurs stopper said, “He (Tanganga) could be the answer for the problems at right-back that we’ve had.

“I was at the Liverpool game and you could see that there were times where you could see his youth, naivety and eagerness to win the ball but other than that I think he’s going to be an outstanding talent.

“He’s one that Jose clearly trusts, one he’s clearly going to rely on and could and already had an impact on the first team. Right-back’s been a big problem, I’ve always said they need to look for a new right-back.”

I felt that Tanganga’s performance against Middlesbrough where he started at right-back was the best of the three games he’s played in far. However, the fact that they were the poorest of the three teams he played against can’t be discounted. I would like to see him tried at right-back a few more times this season as I believe his athleticism and ability to defend one vs one situations makes him a good fit for the role.
