Rodgers reveals Leicester have 9 absentees for Spurs clash – No fit centre-backs

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Leicester have nine players unavailable for their Premier League clash against Tottenham, including no centre-backs fit enough for Thursday’s encounter.

The Foxes welcome Antonio Conte’s side to the King Power Stadium looking to build momentum on the back of the 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle at the weekend.

However, both sides have a host of issues to contend with – namely Covid-related – as well as a number of injury concerns.

Spurs are continuing to recover from a rapid outbreak of the virus which affected eight first-team players and five coaches and caused the partial shut-down of the club’s training ground.

However, the spread is said to have been restrained and a gradual return to training from the affected players is in progress, which has reinforced hopes of Spurs being able to fulfil their match against Leicester.

Meanwhile, Leicester have also had issues related to Covid, but have been dealt a massive blow in terms of the fitness statuses of their defensive reinforcements.

Both Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu have been ruled out for the visit of Spurs with hamstring injuries, while Jannik Vestergaard and Flip Benkovic are set to miss out through illness.

However, Rodgers confirmed Daniel Amartey could return to the Leicester squad but would have to settle for a place on the bench due to a lack of match sharpness.

The absentees mean the Foxes will be without a single recognised centre-back against Spurs, with midfielder Wilfred Ndidi likely to slot into defence as he did against Newcastle.

The match on Thursday will be an odd one considering both teams have a number of absentees and players not at full fitness. Either way, it is expected to be a hard-fought encounter that both sides will want to get through unscathed.
