Romano claims Spurs have ‘verbal agreement’ with Barcelona for next summer

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham have agreed to discuss a potential permanent deal for Clement Lenglet with Barcelona at the end of the season.

Lenglet has made a steady start to life at Spurs following his loan move from Barca in the summer.

However, the centre-back is yet to nail down a place in Antonio Conte’s starting lineup, and he was at fault for Newcastle’s second goal on Sunday, which perhaps demonstrates that he is yet to fully come to terms with the Premier League.

When asked about his future, Lenglet suggested last week that it is too early to think about what will happen next summer but the centre-back did hint that perhaps a permanent switch to Spurs was on the cards if he does well this season (The Guardian).

Romano has now revealed in the latest episode of the Here We Go Podcast (12:20) that even though Spurs do have the option to make the Frenchman’s loan deal permanent, the North London club have a ‘verbal agreement’ with Barca to discuss a potential deal next summer.

I believe that Tottenham will be in the market for a left-sided centre-back next summer, with Alessandro Bastoni likely to be Conte’s number-one choice but that does not necessarily mean there is no chance of Spurs singing Lenglet.

I suspect the Frenchman is really in a fight with Ben Davies to stay at Spurs as Conte will have to make a decision next summer on whether to hang on to the Welshman or to let him go and sign Lenglet permanently instead.
