Romero hopes Newcastle player sees drop in form to help Spurs top-four bid

Cristian Romero has joked to the Paraguayan press that he hopes Miguel Almiron slacks off a bit over the coming months in order to aid Tottenham’s bid to qualify for the Champions League.

Spurs had an opportunity to overtake Newcastle and temporarily move into fourth place with a win at the King Power Stadium but they fell to a morale-deflating 4-1 loss at the hands of Leicester City.

The nature of that loss combined with the long-term injuries to key players such as Rodrigo Bentancur, Hugo Lloris, Ryan Sessegnon, and Yves Bissouma, has severely dented the Lilywhites’ hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Newcastle themselves have not been in great form since the restart, having drawn five of their last six Premier League games but the Magpies have looked much more defensively solid than Antonio Conte’s side.

Almiron’s brilliant form has been a major reason why Newcastle have exceeded expectations so far this season, with the 29-year-old having scored 10 goals in the league so far.

When asked about the winger’s performances this season, Romero told Paraguayan outlet La Nacion: “Newcastle are fighting for Champions League places.

“I always watch the Newcastle games and he (Álmiron) is in a very good moment. You can tell he’s a great player and let’s hope he slackens off a bit and we go up.”

Spurs Web Opinion

In many ways, it is quite unbelievable that Spurs are still just two points off the fourth spot, given how poor we have been since October. However, it is difficult to see us finishing in the top four this season, particularly given how leaky we are at the back.
