Romero makes Kane claim and names two opponents he struggled against this season

Cristian Romero believes Tottenham teammate Harry Kane is the best striker in the Premier League after spending just one season alongside the England forward.

Spurs signed Romero in the summer transfer window on an initial loan from Atalanta and he has impressed in his first season by becoming an important player in Antonio Conte’s three-man defence.

The North London club are expected to complete a permanent deal for the Argentina international this summer (Fabrizio Romano) after successfully booking their place back in the Champions League.

While Romero relished the challenge of trying to keep a host of top strikers quiet, he will have been over the moon to see Tottenham talisman Kane also doing his job at the other end of the pitch.

Despite starting the campaign slowly, the 28-year-old ended the year with a respectable 17 goals and nine assists in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).

And when pressed to name the best striker in England’s top division, Romero told ESPN (as translated by AlbicelesteTalk): “Harry Kane is the best striker in the Premier League.”

With Kane lucky enough to be away from Romero’s aggressive, no-nonsense style of defending, a number of attackers have been less fortunate in that regard.

While Tottenham improved tenfold under Conte to the point where runaway leaders Manchester City and Liverpool failed to beat them across the season, the 24-year-old revealed both sides had a forward that caused him some issues.

Romero explained: “Luis Diaz and Raheem Sterling are the forwards that I struggled against the most this season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Romero enjoyed a very strong debut campaign for Tottenham despite his injury problems. He has a ceiling that hasn’t been reached yet, so hopefully, we’ll be able to see him grow more next season.

His style of defending means he is susceptible to the odd foul and yellow card, especially against quick players like Diaz and Sterling, but overall he has the ability to contain them which is such a valuable asset to have.
