Ronaldo surprised that rumoured Spurs target didn’t get a transfer

Tottenham fans will be quite pleased that the club have been able to strengthen their midfield considerably this summer with the additions of Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele.

One other midfielder Spurs were heavily linked for te majority of the summer was Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes.

Tottenham and Manchester United were both said to be keen on Fernandes (Metro) with neither club managing to agree to a deal for the Portuguese international before the transfer window shut.

The 24-year-old had a prolific campaign for Sporting last season was said to be keen on a move to the Premier League (The Sun).

With a move to England failing to materialise the midfielder has less than two weeks left until the close of the European transfer window, or face another season in Portugal.

Fernandes’ international teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his surprise at the fact that Fernandes still plays his football in Portugal.

Raving about the current talent in the Portuguese national team, Ronaldo told Portuguese station TVi (as translated by the Daily Mail): “In the national team you have [Joao] Cancelo, Bruno Fernandes, who nobody knows why he doesn’t leave.

“In the national team, you have a lot of talent, so I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Possibly this new generation will be the best at the talent level, but that’s not enough.

“They have to want to. I have spoken to him [Fernandes]. I’m a captain who wants to help and be helped.”

It is only a matter of time before a player of Fernandes’ talent gets his move to a big club. With Eriksen looking like he will leave sooner or later, Fernandes is one of the few midfielders in Europe who has the talent to replace the Dane.
