Roy Keane pays a rare compliment to Spurs player who is a ‘nuisance to play against’

Roy Keane has said that opposition players will not enjoy coming up against Timo Werner, who is capable of causing plenty of headaches to defenders.

Werner’s arrival at Spurs was met with mixed reception by the English press, with his struggles at Chelsea still fresh in the memories of many.

However, the 28-year-old has undoubtedly looked much more comfortable at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium than he ever did at Stamford Bridge.

The forward will perhaps never be very clinical in front of goal and has continued to come under criticism for some of the opportunities he has spurned at Spurs, with Alan Brazil even asserting last week that the German is ‘nowhere near good enough’ and even calling on him to hang up his boots (talkSPORT).

However, Ange Postecoglou certainly values the attacking threat that the on-loan Leipzig man brings to his side and he once again made the difference for Spurs on Sunday against Nottingham Forest.

He troubled Forest right-back Neco Williams all game and played a key role in Tottenham’s opener, with his dangerous cross being put into his own net by Murillo.

Roy Keane pays a rare compliment to Timo Werner

Speaking after Spurs’ 3-1 win over Forest, Keane said about the wide-forward (via Sky Sports – broadcast on 7/4; 20:14): “He’s a nuisance to play against, isn’t he, Werner? There are question marks about his end product and whatever, his final pass. But he does affect games, he is a threat.

“I think probably wide [is his best role]. I don’t think he enjoys it so much when his back’s to play, and his hold-up play. But when he’s in these wide positions, he is effective.”

While Werner will never be the most clinical in front of goal, he has some fantastic strengths, with his directness certainly giving Tottenham a different dimension in attack. The 28-year-old is quite skilled at creating half a yard for himself and is a decent crosser of the ball with his weaker foot.
