Roy Keane rips into ‘average’ Spurs players – only two escape criticism

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has claimed that only two members of the Tottenham Hotspur squad are not ‘pretty average’.

Keane was speaking after Antonio Conte’s side suffered a frustrating 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford yesterday evening with the north Londoners having succumbed to a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick when in fact they were the better team for the majority of the Premier League encounter.

The 50-year-old praised Harry Kane and Heung-min Son as outstanding players but pulled no punches with his assessment of the rest of the team which is the reason why he thinks Spurs’ results have been indifferent.

Keane suggested that Conte will want to revamp the squad in the summer and bring in better players than what he currently has at his disposal.

He told Sky Sports: “Spurs have very good players, Kane and Son; the rest are pretty average.

“That’s why the results are the way they are because Spurs aren’t good. They’re not bad on their day, everyone was delighted when they beat City because they done well, conceded two, beat Everton – who were all over the place.

“But this is still an average Spurs team, I’ve argued with Jamie who fight their corner, the results.

“They’re good going forward but they concede the three goals. Conte’s an emotional guy but get to the summer, he’ll want to go back and get in better. Spurs are not very good.”

Keane is being somewhat harsh with his assessment that the rest of the team are average. Cristian Romero has already proven himself to be one of the best defenders in the league while Dejan Kulusevski has impressed in the majority of his outings since joining from Juventus.

Granted, there are players who would struggle to get into many of the other top six sides and there has to be a significant revamp of the playing personnel. The pressure is firmly on Daniel Levy to put his hand in his pocket or risk Conte walking away.
