Rumour – Spurs defender hands in transfer request

Sebastien Bassong

Rumours are circulating that Sebastien Bassong has handed in a transfer request at Tottenham.

The 24-year-old joined Spurs from Newcastle United in August 2009 for £8million on a five-year-deal.  Apparently Spurs are willing to allow Bassong to leave as long as they recoup the transfer fee.

Bassong has failed to break into Harry Redknapp’s regular first-team plans despite injuries to Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King.  He still finds himself behind Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Younes Kaboul in the central defensive options at White Hart Lane.

He held talks with Harry Redknapp in January over his future but could now be on his way back to France with a possible move to Paris St Germain.

  1. Well isn’t life a biatch… see the grass isn’t always greener on the other side & it’s just tough that you left the Toon when you had a regular 1st team slot every weeek…

  2. Shame he didnt make it but we need new blood so anyone who isnt 1st team should be sold to whoever offers a decent price.

  3. at the end he was a bad buy.skilful yes, would mix it and go in where it hurts,no.english football is rough and tough.you have to have the willingness to run at a brick wall.bassong doesnt have these qualities.wish him well.

  4. Just to wish Spurs well next sunday against Birmingham City, if it helps….to dare is to do – come on you Spurs….relegate the scum that is Birmingham City….we gave you some cheer today, hope you can return the favour (Frosty, the Villa Fan)

  5. Thought he looked good with Dawson last season. Can understand his frustration as we had one of the best defensive records. Kaboul and Gallas our prone to injury and king and woodgate are as good as finished. Think he could be important next season esp with europa so wouldn’t let him go.

  6. Bassong was a class buy and a regular last season when we DID qualify for the Champions League. Hes obviously fallen out with Arry because he is the natural replacement for Ekotto.(yet Rose gets the nod instead) I cant understand why he cant get a game and feel very sorry for him. Il be a bit sad when he and Krankjaar (spellcheck) leave. I like Arry a lot but sometimes he baffles me COYS

    • Personally I'm glad rose is getting the nod. whilst his defensive positioningis a bit suspect and his lack of height is an issue playing at LB (although hasn't hurt Evra and Cole has it) He's done well filling in for BAE. I can't remember seeing Bassong play LB but I just can't see him getting forward as much as Rose has done. We need to start relying on players like rose, and stop loaning them out when they're on the fringe of the first team. Really pissed me off when we loaned out Walker to villa only to see Charlie and Hutton get injured at the same time.

  7. All very well and good but with two years PL and one tear CL experience, who’ll pay the £10.5m price tag?

He’s a good young player who’ll benefit from Europa and CC runs next season if he stays

  8. Decent centre back but ultimately not quite good enough. Was at the heart of our defence when we shipped buckets of goals at Berne, Inter and Fulham. Makes me nervous when he’s on the ball. I do remember him making brilliant saving tackles against Torres earlier in the season however against Liverpool at home I think.

  9. Yeh I rated him last season he was great, I think that will help us get the fee back, he just isnt as good as gallas or king or kaboul….and Dawson is a different type of defender.

Whoever he goes too will do well, I actually think he would do well at Arsenal….just add Hutton 6m, Keane 6m, O'Hara 6m, Giovani 5m, Pav 10m and Krancjar (altho I luv him) 8m., Bentley 7m…thats 50million our squads trimed by 7 players

Then we make big decisions on players like Gomes, Defoe, Woodgate, and Corluka

Sign Marin, Falcao and get Walker back from Loan

    • Good post. He has regressed somewhat this year and tends to get out muscled in a way in which our other defender do not.

I think your outgoings and figures are about right. I think Defoe will stay and, although he's had a poor season interrupted by injuries and terrible challenges (on him), Corluka's a classy defender. He also provides cover at centre back. Walker will be back for sure.

Who's this Falcao chap we keep hearing about?

  10. I’m a Spurs fan from South Africa and I must say, you English is an unforgiving bunch. Even if a player is a top bloke and he has some off days you won’t hesitate to crucify him! Sebastien is not that bad a player.

    • "Crucify" is a strong word in this comparison. No, people will not hesitate to critizice someone, if he does not live up to his potential. And it is important for every fan of this club, that we get the right transfers done: Out with the players that have no desire to stay, and that we have no need for. And in with a few, class players, that can help boost the team, so we can get back into Champions League… :)
