Rumoured Spurs target announces he will not renew contract with current club

Rumoured Tottenham target Matthias Ginter has admitted he will not be renewing his contract with Borussia Monchengladbach, which runs out at the end of the season.

Ginter has been a consistent performer for Gladbach and an indispensable part of their backline since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017.

The versatile defender was alleged to be on Tottenham’s radar during the summer transfer window (Bild via Sport Witness) but he ended up staying put at Borussia Park.

Some sources had alleged that Spurs were monitoring the 27-year-old’s contract situation ahead of the January transfer window.

Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl admitted in October that the club were unable to make a suitable offer to the 27-year-old due to the financial impact of the pandemic.

Ginter has now put an end to the speculation regarding a new deal by announcing that he will be leaving the Bundesliga club when his contract comes to an end.

The German international said (via BuliNews): “After long deliberations, I have decided not to renew my expiring contract.

“After five fantastic years at Borussia Mönchengladbach, it is difficult for me to take this step, but I’ve decided upon a different path for my personal and professional development.

“I owe a lot to the fans of Borussia and shall always carry this club in my heart. Now I will go with a full head of steam into the second half of the season.

“Those who know me know that I will give everything to accomplish the goals still possible in this season together with everyone else.”

I suspect Ginter will certainly be a tempting option for Spurs in the summer as the German is a natural fit for Conte’s back three. While Sanchez has been exceptional over the last few weeks, Conte might view the Gladbach man as an upgrade over the Colombian.
