Rumoured Spurs target Dayot Upamecano handed Leipzig ultimatum

Rumoured Tottenham target Dayot Upamecano has been given an ultimatum regarding his future at RB Leipzig according to Bild.

Tottenham have been linked with the centre back by Don Balon following an impressive performance from the youngster in the 3-0 victory over Jose Mourinho’s side in March.

The 21-year-old defender has a contract at Leipzig until the summer of 2021, however, the Bundesliga side have made it clear that they are not willing to allow him to leave for nothing.

Leipzig’s sporting director, Oliver Mintzlaff has told the Frenchman he must either sign a new contract or face being sold this summer.

“Upamecano is an extremely important player for us and one of the most sought-after talents in Europe,” Mintzlaff told Bild.

“And we can assure that we have a clear understanding with him and his agent he won’t leave us on a free. We can’t afford that as a club.

“There are only two options: prolong or leave. I am sure we’ll soon find out in which direction it’s going.”

Upamecano joined Leipzig in 2017 from their sister-club, RB Salzburg for a fee in the region of £4.5million (Transfermarkt).

The French Under-21 international has made 25 appearances for Leipzig in this season’s Bundesliga campaign and six appearances in their Champions League run.

It is also reported Arsenal are another team which have shown interest in the player and are monitoringing his availability (Daily Star).

This could be a great move for Tottenham. Upamecano has improved dramatically this season and has impressed across all competitions. With Jan Vertonghen seemingly on his way out this summer, this could be a move which makes a lot of sense but ultimately depends on the price.
