Rumoured Spurs target said to be ‘one of the world’s top five’

Tottenham have been linked with multiple goalkeepers over the last few weeks and months with some big names like Andre Onana (The Sun) and Thomas Strakosha (Il Tempo – print edition, page 30, March 13, 2020) being branded as targets for the Lilywhites this summer.

Another goalkeeper who Spurs have been linked with who might not be a household name yet in this part of the world is Trabzonspor number one Ugurcan Cakir.

Cakir has been in stellar form for Trabzonspor this season and has played an important role in their rise to the top of the Turkish Super Lig.

His impressive displays have reportedly seen him attract the attention of several clubs across Europe with the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool, Lazio, Monaco, Brighton and Newcastle all reportedly sending their scouts to watch the 24-year-old in action this season (Fotospor).

Tottenham have reportedly already had an offer of £18million turned down by Trabzonspor for the Turkish international (Karadeniz Gazete).

The club’s vice-president Ertugrul Dogan has now insisted that the Cakir is up there with the best goalkeepers in the world.

Speaking to Footmac, Dogan said: “Our players are very valuable players.

“Ugurcan Çakır is one of the world’s top five goalkeepers. (But) we do not have any idea about the departure of anybody at the moment.”

People will be sceptical about Dogan’s claim as any team is going to big-up the values of their own players. However, I don’t think the claim of Cakir being one of the top five in the world is so outlandish.

I have been extremely impressed every time I have seen him play and I would be surprised if he is not snapped up by one of the big guns this summer.
