Rumoured Spurs target signs new five-year deal

Benfica central defender Ruben Dias has signed a new five year deal with the Portuguese giants, committing himself to the club until 2024 (as announced by the club’s official website).

The news comes as a major blow to Tottenham who were reportedly one of the sides which were monitoring the progress of Dias.

The Independent reported a few days ago that Dias was one of the transfer targets which Jose Mourinho had put on his potential January transfer window shopping list.

The 22-year-old defender has been a rock at the back for Benfica for the last two seasons.

However, this new contract is likely to significantly increase his transfer value with his release clause now standing at €100m.

The defender spoke of his delight at extending his stay at Benfica. Speaking to the club’s official website, Dias said: “I’ve always been calm over this time. My mind was always where it should be. Me and the club were in line and we have reached this deal in time.

“There’s only one thing in my head: to win and bring titles home. I believe that this was the main reason for the renewal.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I honestly don’t think we need another centre half in January as long as both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are willing to commit their futures to the club. While we might have to move for one eventually given the pair’s age, with Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Juan Foyth and Ben Davies all capable of playing in the position, we are fairly well stocked at the moment.
