Rumoured Spurs transfer target left out of squad for first match of the season

Rumoured Tottenham transfer target Miralem Pjanic was left out of Barcelona’s first La Liga game against Real Sociedad, with the 31-year-old not evening making the bench for the 4-2 win over Real Sociedad.

Ronald Koeman stated that he only picked players who represent the ‘future of this club’, in quotes reported by Tuttomercatoweb.

Barcelona’s current situation means they have to offload players this summer in order to balance the books, although they bought Pjanic for €60m only last summer.

A few weeks ago, Barcelona’s director of football Mateu Alemany even told Football Espana that ‘we know the situation and are evaluating the possibility of finding Pjanic a new club’.

Sport have also reported that Tottenham enquired about Pjanic a few weeks ago and Nuno Espirito Santo has given the transfer a green light.

Ronald Koeman, Barcelona’s current manager, said this about Pjanic’s situation:

“We have 27 players. I have to leave out four and everyone knows (Pjanic’s) situation perfectly.

“I’m a coach who always gives a chance to young people who are the future of this club.”

Pjanic is clearly an extremely talented player who has played at the top of the game. It is a shame that he has been caught up in the mess that is Barcelona. But if he does become a free agent, it could be an offer that is hard to look past, depending on his wage demands.
