Ryan Mason comments on Tottenham players reimbursing fans for Newcastle tickets

Tottenham Hotspur’s Acting Head Coach Ryan Mason has been speaking to the press ahead of the midweek Premier League fixtures, and took some time to reflect on the players offering to compensate fans for Newcastle United match day ticket.

An already frustrating season hit a new low on Sunday afternoon when Tottenham succumbed to an embarrassing 6-1 defeat at St James’ Park.

The result saw Spurs’ hopes of a top four finish dissipate and also brought Cristian Stellini’s short stint as interim manager to an end.

Roughly 3,000 Tottenham fans made the long journey from North London to Newcastle on Sunday, but many left the stadium early after the Magpies stormed to a 5-0 lead inside the opening 21 minutes.

The players sent a message to fans on the club’s official Twitter account in the wake of the defeat, offering to reimburse any fans who bought tickets for the match.

The statement read: “As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger. It wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts.

“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match day tickets from St James’ Park.

“We know this dos not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us.

“Together – and only together – can we move things forward.”

Spurs are now preparing for the visit of Manchester United tomorrow evening, which will mark Mason’s first game in charge of the first team this time around.

Reflecting on the past week and the anger of the fans, Mason was asked by Football.London how he felt regarding the players’ decision to pay back the loyal supporters.

He said: “Pleased because fans are important to us. We value them and need them.”

Paying back the fans for that game is the least the club and the players can do, but it will mean nothing unless we see a better performance tomorrow and for the rest of the season.

Games can be won and lost, but we have to see passion and desire from every single player in every single match.
