Ryan Mason delivers response on whether Yves Bissouma could start against Brentford

Ryan Mason has been speaking to the press ahead of the weekend’s action and has provided some insight into the fitness status of Yves Bissouma and his recovery from injury.

Bissouma signed for Tottenham last summer from Brighton, and high hopes were placed on his shoulders for the season. Sadly, the campaign hasn’t quite worked out for the midfielder.

A combination of injuries and some difficulties in adapting to the Tottenham system has seen Bissouma underwhelm in his debut season for the Lilywhites. He has made 26 appearances so far, but has failed to contribute any goals or assists (Transfermarkt).

The Malian had been out of action for the last three months with an ankle injury sustained back in February. However, Bissouma managed 29 minutes during the 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa last weekend and was arguably one of the better players on the pitch for Spurs in the loss which has hampered their hopes of a place in the Europa League.

With Rodridgo Bentancur out injured until later in the year, Bissouma’s return is a welcome one. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp had been holding down the fort in the middle of the park, but many believe Bissouma offers something a little different to that pairing.

In his latest press conference, Mason was asked about the condition of Bissouma and whether he could start the next game.

He told Football.London: “I think when players train and they train fully then in my eyes they’re fit to play. We’ve got some decisions to make.”

Bissouma looked surprisingly sharp against Villa and it’s a huge boost to have him back among selection, especially with Hojbjerg and Skipp having serious limitations when it comes to creating opportunities further up the pitch.

There is no need to rush him at this stage, so I would not expect him to start against Brentford, but we should see him come off the bench again and get some minutes under his belt as he continues on the path to full fitness.
